The answer lies in the remarkable individuals drawn to this property in 1907. The castle’s mystique continues to pique the curiosity of passersby due to its unique location. Despite being visible to all, it remains secluded within the forty-four acres of pristine desert surrounding it.
Managed by the Tovrea Carraro Society and owned by the City of Phoenix, the site’s main attraction is the castle itself. This architectural marvel stands four stories high, encompassing 5,000 square feet. Perched atop the highest point of the granite-rich property, the castle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The meticulously maintained cactus gardens and untouched Sonoran Desert flora add to the castle’s allure, providing scenic backdrops and opportunities for exploration along the established trail system.
In 1996, the City of Phoenix acquired the Tovrea land, and shortly after that, it received recognition and protection as a National Historic Place. Since 2012, the Tovrea Carraro Society has been conducting public tours, allowing visitors to step back and immerse themselves in the castle’s rich history. However, it has been challenging for residents and tourists to secure a spot due to overwhelming demand. To address this, the society has implemented an annual fall ticket lottery, ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to experience the castle’s grandeur.
Recently, Tovrea Castle made headlines when an intruder trespassed on the property, causing significant damage to the basement doors and a historical exhibit, amounting to approximately $90,000 in repairs. Yet, despite this unfortunate incident, the dedication to preserving the castle’s legacy remains unwavering.
