Chihuly is originally from Tacoma, Washington. After moving on from the College of Washington with a degree in the inside plan, he signed up for the Military and served in Korea. He then, at that point, went to the Rhode Island School of Plans on the GI Bill. Chihuly’s first use of glass as an artistic medium came during a class at RISD taught by painter Harvey Littleton, who is credited with inventing studio glass.
Chihuly co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School near Seattle in 1971, and his work began to gain international recognition in the mid-1970s. In 1976, he was severely injured in a car accident and lost the use of his left hand, but he persevered and continued to work with the help of assistants.
In 1977, Chihuly organized the first “Glassblowing Workshop” at Palazzo Ducale in Venice, Italy. This led to his involvement in several large-scale public art projects, including “The Venice Project” in 1986 and “Chihuly Over Venice” in 1995-96. His work has been exhibited in more than two hundred museums and galleries worldwide.
