The Wave is a sandstone formation created from Navajo Sandstone that dates back nearly 190 million years. Over millions of years, shifting dunes hardened into stone, while wind, rain, and erosion sculpted the smooth curves and colorful layers visitors see today. The result is an otherworldly landscape that looks almost too perfect to be natural.
The Wave is located near the Arizona-Utah border within the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. Although the formation is technically in Arizona, the closest communities are Kanab, Utah, and Page, Arizona. The hike begins from the Wire Pass Trailhead off House Rock Valley Road, a mostly unpaved road that can become muddy and impassable after heavy rain.
